    Nonlinear Hodge maps

    We consider maps between Riemannian manifolds in which the map is a stationary point of the nonlinear Hodge energy. The variational equations of this functional form a quasilinear, nondiagonal, nonuniformly elliptic system which models certain kinds of compressible flow. Conditions are found under which singular sets of prescribed dimension cannot occur. Various degrees of smoothness are proven for the sonic limit, high-dimensional flow, and flow having nonzero vorticity. The gradient flow of solutions is estimated.     A Comparative Study of Public Beliefs about Five Energy Systems

    Public perceptions (n=244) of five alternative energy sources (nuclear, coal, oil, hydro, and solar) were examined using an attitude model based upon the underlying beliefs held about the attitude object (e.g., each energy system); the focus was on the differing perceptions of sub-groups (n=50) most PRO and CON the use of nuclear energy. Both PRO and CON groups preferred hydro and solar energy to the other energy sources; but the PRO Nuclear Group preferred nuclear energy to the fossil fuels while, for the CON Nuclear Group, nuclear energy was the least preferred system. Of the theoretically possible significant contributors to near-term Austrian electricity supply which were considered in this study (i.e., nuclear, coal, oil), the PRO Nuclear Group saw oil as the alternative to nuclear energy while the CON Nuclear Group preferred coal to oil as the non-nuclear alternative. Factor analysis found that five, relatively independent belief dimensions characterize public thinking about energy systems: beliefs about future-oriented and political risks; economic benefits; environmental risks; psychological/physical risks; and future technology development. Analysis of the belief systems suggested that both PRO and CON Nuclear Groups preferred hydro and solar energy because these systems were perceived as being the least threatening on all risk-related dimensions. The PRO group saw nuclear energy as the system most likely to lead to economic benefits and future technological developments; their low ratings of fossil fuels were primarily due to beliefs that the fossil fuels could provide only marginal economic benefits while leading to appreciable environmental risks. In contrast, the CON group viewed nuclear energy as only marginally more likely to provide economic and technological benefits than the fossil fuels, but as an appreciably greater threat on the risk-related dimensions

    Rhythmic Diurnal Gene Expression in Human Adipose Tissue From Individuals Who Are Lean, Overweight, and Type 2 Diabetic

    OBJECTIVE Previous animal studies suggest a functional relationship between metabolism, type 2 diabetes, and the amplitude of daily rhythms in white adipose tissue (WAT). However, data interpretation is confounded by differences in genetic background and diet or limited sampling points. We have taken the novel approach of analyzing serial human WAT biopsies across a 24-h cycle in controlled laboratory conditions.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Lean (n = 8), overweight/obese (n = 11), or overweight/obese type 2 diabetic (n = 8) volunteers followed a strict sleep-wake and dietary regimen for 1 week prior to the laboratory study. They were then maintained in controlled light-dark conditions in a semirecumbent posture and fed hourly during wake periods. Subcutaneous WAT biopsies were collected every 6 h over 24 h, and gene expression was measured by quantitative PCR.RESULTS Lean individuals exhibited significant (P 0.05) of increased body weight or type 2 diabetes on rhythmic gene expression.CONCLUSIONS The robust nature of these rhythms and their relative phasing indicate that WAT now can be considered as a peripheral tissue suitable for the study of in vivo human rhythms. Comparison of data between subject groups clearly indicates that obesity and type 2 diabetes are not related to the amplitude of rhythmic WAT gene expression in humans maintained under controlled conditions.     Formal Verification of Security Protocol Implementations: A Survey

    Automated formal verification of security protocols has been mostly focused on analyzing high-level abstract models which, however, are significantly different from real protocol implementations written in programming languages. Recently, some researchers have started investigating techniques that bring automated formal proofs closer to real implementations. This paper surveys these attempts, focusing on approaches that target the application code that implements protocol logic, rather than the libraries that implement cryptography. According to these approaches, libraries are assumed to correctly implement some models. The aim is to derive formal proofs that, under this assumption, give assurance about the application code that implements the protocol logic.     Perception of Nuclear Energy and Coal in France and the Netherlands

    This study focuses on the perception of large scale application of nuclear energy and coal in the Netherlands and France. The application of these energy-sources and the risks and benefits are judged differently by various group in society. In Europe, France has the highest density of nuclear power plants and the Netherlands has one of the lowest. In both countries scientists and social scientists completed a questionnaire assessing the perception of the large scale application of both energy sources. Furthermore, a number of variables relating to the socio cultural and political circumstances were measured. The results indicate that the French had a higher risk perception and a more negative attitude toward nuclear power than the Dutch. But they also assess the benefits of the use of nuclear power to be higher. Explanations for these differences are discussed

    Size-tuneable synthesis of nickel nanoparticles

    A facile method is described for synthesising nickel nanoparticles via the thermal decomposition of an organometallic precursor in the presence of excess n-trioctylphosphine as a capping ligand. For the first time, alkylamines with different chain lengths were employed as size-limiting agents in this synthesis. A direct correlation is demonstrated between the size of the alkylamine ligands used and the mean diameter of the nickel nanoparticles obtained. The use of bulky oleylamine as a size-limiting agent over a reaction period of 30 min led to the growth of nickel nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 2.8 ± 0.9 nm. The employment of less bulky N,N-dimethylhexadecylamine groups led to the growth of nickel nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 4.4 ± 0.9 nm. By increasing the reaction time from 30 to 240 min, while employing oleylamine as the size-limiting agent, the mean diameter of the nickel nanoparticles was increased from 2.8 ± 0.9 to 5.1 ± 0.7 nm. Decreasing the amount of capping ligand present in the reaction system allowed further growth of the nickel nanoparticles to 17.8 ± 1.3 nm. The size, structure and morphology of the nanoparticles synthesised were characterised by transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction; while magnetic measurements indicated that the particles were superparamagnetic in nature

    Daily Rhythms of Plasma Melatonin, but Not Plasma Leptin or Leptin mRNA, Vary between Lean, Obese and Type 2 Diabetic Men

    Melatonin and leptin exhibit daily rhythms that may contribute towards changes in metabolic physiology. It remains unclear, however, whether this rhythmicity is altered in obesity or type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We tested the hypothesis that 24-hour profiles of melatonin, leptin and leptin mRNA are altered by metabolic status in laboratory conditions. Men between 45–65 years old were recruited into lean, obese-non-diabetic or obese-T2DM groups. Volunteers followed strict sleep-wake and dietary regimes for 1 week before the laboratory study. They were then maintained in controlled light-dark conditions, semi-recumbent posture and fed hourly iso-energetic drinks during wake periods. Hourly blood samples were collected for hormone analysis. Subcutaneous adipose biopsies were collected 6-hourly for gene expression analysis. Although there was no effect of subject group on the timing of dim light melatonin onset (DLMO), nocturnal plasma melatonin concentration was significantly higher in obese-non-diabetic subjects compared to weight-matched T2DM subjects (p<0.01) and lean controls (p<0.05). Two T2DM subjects failed to produce any detectable melatonin, although did exhibit plasma cortisol rhythms comparable to others in the group. Consistent with the literature, there was a significant (p<0.001) effect of subject group on absolute plasma leptin concentration and, when expressed relative to an individual’s 24-hour mean, plasma leptin showed significant (p<0.001) diurnal variation. However, there was no difference in amplitude or timing of leptin rhythms between experimental groups. There was also no significant effect of time on leptin mRNA expression. Despite an overall effect (p<0.05) of experimental group, post-hoc analysis revealed no significant pair-wise effects of group on leptin mRNA expression. Altered plasma melatonin rhythms in weight-matched T2DM and non-diabetic individuals supports a possible role of melatonin in T2DM aetiology. However, neither obesity nor T2DM changed 24-hour rhythms of plasma leptin relative to cycle mean, or expression of subcutaneous adipose leptin gene expression, compared with lean subjects

    Science-Policy Interactions in MPA Site Selection in the Dutch Part of the North Sea

    At the 7th conference of the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD-COP7, Kuala Lumpur, 2004) it was agreed to establish a global network of marine and coastal protected areas by 2012. The defined objectives of this MPA-network are based on the ecosystem approach: to protect biodiversity and other ecological values, and to ensure sustainable use. The (inter)national policy guidelines state that the selection of MPAs should be based on scientific information and ecological criteria only. As a signatory to the Convention, the Netherlands is now faced with meeting this obligation, and the process of designating the first Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Dutch part of the North Sea is currently in progress. We focus on the science–policy interactions that are part of this Dutch MPA selection process. By taking a closer look at the contemporary site selection process as well as its historical background, we show that ecological, socio-economic and political considerations cannot always be easily separated. Uncertainty is high and the ultimate selection and delimitation of candidate sites rather seems to be the result of a balancing act between ecological, socio-economic and political interests, in which scientific and policy guiding procedures blend with ad-hoc political decision making, and with expert judgment in cases where data is lacking.
